Despite challenging weather conditions, the New Romney Obelisk was officially unveiled today by Mayor John Rivers. This striking Town Identifier, located opposite St Nicholas’s Church, is the result of a collaborative effort involving over 400 local participants, including schools, cub groups, and attendees of public workshops. The project, led by Teach Me Courses, was brought to life by talented blacksmith Sam Briggs, who crafted the stunning metal structure.
The obelisk, adorned with mosaic tiles, celebrates New Romney’s rich history, featuring historical events spanning decades up to the present. Local community members played a key role in shaping the project, with many contributing to the mosaic through free workshops run by Teach Me Courses. Participants also created keepsake coasters during the workshops.
At the top of the obelisk, the Town Trail logo is displayed, seamlessly incorporating the New Romney Town sign into the design. The obelisk stands as a symbol of the town’s heritage, a unique addition for both visitors and residents to admire. Make sure to visit and see this impressive landmark!
