A Portrait Without Apology: Frida Kahlo in Watercolour with Sam Scott

Event Description

Frida Kahlo was never going to fade quietly into the background — she painted herself into history in colour, flowers and defiance.

Sam Scott will guide you through the painting process from start to finish, helping you build confidence with watercolour as the portrait develops. No experience is needed, and complete beginners are very welcome.

You’ll work from a prepared outline, which means you can focus on the painting itself — gradually building Frida’s features, adding depth and expression to the face, and developing the bold floral details that give the portrait so much presence.

Throughout the session, Sam will demonstrate how to use watercolour in a loose and expressive way, including how to control water and pigment, build layers of colour and keep the finished piece fresh rather than overworked.

The aim is not to create an exact copy, but to capture Frida’s strength, individuality and unmistakable presence in your own finished painting, while learning useful watercolour techniques along the way.

Groups are kept small, allowing plenty of time for individual guidance and support throughout the workshop.

Everything is provided, including all tools and materials, with biscuits and refreshments included.
